Photograph Fees

Photographs of images at the New York State Historical Association may be obtained from two places. Images from art works in the Fenimore Art Museum collection are obtained through the Registrar. This would include photos from photograph collections owned by our museums.

A major photo collection owned by our Fenimore Art Museum is the Smith-Telfer Collection - the work of two Cooperstown photographers spanning more than a century. Many of the images from the Smith & Telfer Collection can be viewed by following this link. Smith & Telfer Photographic Collection

Photographs from the local history files or any others from our library's collection are accessed through the library.

Upon request, we can mail out schedules of photographic service charges - study/lecture or publication - and permission to publish forms. Basically our charges for having our photographer make black and white photos are:

  • An 8x10 b&w print for personal or research use - $20 ($60 if no negative exists)
  • An 8x10 b&w print for publication in a book - $65 (A permission to publish form would also have to be completed.)

You are welcome to visit our facility to look at any of our materials with images. The library is open Monday to Friday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. year round. Special Collections is open by appointment. The photos in our museum's collection may be seen upon appointment (607.547.1400).
